These tiny bees are Mining Bees or Digger Bees. They are ground dwellers and are mostly seen in the spring. They are part of a large group of bees that dig small holes in the ground. The genus Andrena alone comprises 1300 species.
The Black-Eyed Susan is the state flower of Maryland and its botanical name is Rudbeckia and is in the family Asteraceae.
