This purple Hoary Verbena ( Verbenaceae ) is being visited by what I thought was a very interesting bee. It turns out not to be a bee at all! It is a Large Bee Fly and is in the family Bombylius major! It is a large pollen collector. With a hairy body with long hairy legs and a characteristically long, slender tongue which they use for nectar retrieval whilst hovering beside a flower.
